See the press release published here: www.tinyurl.com/DMK-NDA-Press 18/3/2020 0 Comments Coronavirus UpdateI want to signpost some groups that have been formed over my constituency to help and assist those self-isolating- they wish to ensure that those self-isolating have the necessary food and resources to last the time in which they are self-isolating.
As a young person myself, I am constantly surrounded by the media and taking in all it has to say on COVID19. Some young people may be anxious, worried and scared about the pandemic so please visit YoungMinds' helpful article on staying safe. In Andover, there is a main Facebook page of volunteers called the Andover Self-Isolating Help Group. They are offering services for Andover and the surrounding area to help pick up prescriptions, groceries and able to offer to have a chat over the phone- things like that to help everyone manage. In Basingstoke, the best person to contact is Maria Miller, Member of Parliament for Basingstoke for help and assistance as her office will forward you to a local group in Basingstoke who can assist you in getting groceries or anything else. In Romsey, the best person to contact is also Caroline Nokes MP, the Member of Parliament for Romsey and Southampton North, who will forward you to a local group who can provide assistance. If you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Yet again thank you for staying strong during these turbulent times and I wish you all the best. Please find attached January's newsletter to update my constituents on my work as their Member of Youth Parliament for North West Hampshire.
My constituency of North West Hampshire is made up of Test Valley and Basingstoke and Deane. There are around 22,000 young people within the constituency.
Before Make Your Mark, every educational establishment was contacted three times in 2-week periods before registration, four times during the registration process and twice during the voting period to ensure sure as many young people took part in North West Hampshire. I, Dmitrijs Meiksans MYP, the Member of Youth Parliament, received a lot of responses. • Bishop Challoner Catholic School, Basingstoke • John Hanson Community School, Andover • Harrow Way Community School, Andover • Queen Mary's College, Basingstoke • The Hurst Community College, Tadley • Icknield School, Andover Also, I collected ballots from the Hampshire Youth Network, a group brought together at the request of HM Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire. The group aims to unite young people across the Hampshire county through communication and events that matter to them. In total, my constituency had got 7,175 completed in total which is approximately 53% of the total ballots completed in the whole of the Hampshire county. And I reached around 40% of the young people in my constituency. All schools had voted on physical ballot papers which were ordered in by me. I had visited Bishop Challoner in Basingstoke where I had got the chance to speak to all Year 9 and Year 10 tutor groups about democracy and my role within the local community and then the whole school proceeded to vote during the time after my visit. I want to thank the Assistant Headteacher, Teresa Cripps for being an advocate for the UK Youth Parliament at the school. I also visited John Hanson Community School where I spoke to the student council about my role and I had the opportunity to hear what they thought was a problem with the local community and I had collected their completed ballots also. I also led assemblies at Harrow Way Community School and heard the amazing, thoughtful conversations which were delivered by the young people of the school and what they thought should be our main priority for our campaigns which will launch early 2020. With regards to results, overall within the constituency, the largest voted for campaigns were 'Protect the Environment' and 'Mental Health'. The local issues were of a broad range but often had overlapping themes. One of the issues which were raised is the lack of community spaces and lack of youth-specific activities within the community for young people to be able to socialise, be able to relax etc. As an action, I, as the MYP for the area, will be working hard with the local councils to be able to curate youth hubs within the local communities and make sure young people have a say with how their towns develop, especially at the moment with the Andover town centre currently being rejuvenated so ensuring they raise their voice on how the town should grow, yet still reach both the older demographic of the town's population and the younger demographic. Another issue which was raised was safety among the Andover/Basingstoke respective town centres and the ongoing concern of county lines, drug-dealing, consumption of alcohol and knife crime amongst young people so as a further action I will be working yet again closely with the councils to see how we are able to comfort and educate young people on these topics, eventually creating an ambassador's program for the young people. I also hope to develop a project with young people and the Member of Parliament for their area so the young people can learn about politics even closer. |
